I am a journalist.
I figure this is my chance to write something in the first-person and share a smidgen of who I am. I used to be a teacher, and before that, a radio announcer for nine years. That time included work at my college station and the number one radio station in that community, at that time. Both stations are in Alabama. I studied abroad in Spain for one year, and when I returned, I worked temp assignments until I landed a gig at a Southern California radio station. I worked there for three years...
Then 9/11 happened.
I am sure I'm not the only one who had an epiphany after that tragic day. For years, I wanted to explore education and make a difference in the lives of young people. Sounds like a trite notion, but I applied with a Los Angeles-area school district. My favorite lessons involved teaching my little students the magic of taking their thoughts and oral stories and turning them into tales others could enjoy even when they weren't around to tell them.
I taught six years.
And there was another ephipany.
I really love journalism. I love radio. I love storytelling, and I want to share information as my day job. Sure, I was sharing information as a teacher, and that is still something I enjoy and plan to pursue. I enjoy both disciplines because of their variety. There is always something new to cover, something new to learn and share.
This Web site is a small and growing example of my affair with the ever-evolving art of journalistic storytelling. My goals are to develop my ability to tell stories whether written, oral, or visual while using as many of the tools in my skill set as possible.
